Time spent with cats is never wasted

Updated: Apr 22

That Freud fellow was a smart man, indeed. No idea if he had anything else to say that was important...

I thought I'd introduce you to my two co-collaborators today; the true bosses of The BookCat. One is a ball of fluff whose days are spent trying to crawl into my skin, the other is sleek missile of chaos with the singing voice of a demon.

Meet Rupert, The CuddleCat...

Rupert with his baby, Ted.
Rupert with his baby, Ted.

Rupert is a bear of very little brain, but has the biggest heart known to catkind - but only for me. He is obsessed with me (he doesn't really care for other humans). Honestly, if he weren't so sweet it might be uncomfortable... fortunately for us both he's fluffy and cuddly. His favourite thing to do is to tunnel under blankets, cuddle into me and nap.

Well, cuddles and suckling my fingers.

He also adores his Ted. Ted is a little teddy that my husband gifted and he came with 50 red roses, after the roses wilted Ted lived on a shelf. That is until a baby Rupert spotted him and mounted a daring rescue mission, and now Ted lives in our bed where he is snuggled and groomed by a much bigger bear.

This fluffy cat is also constantly scruffy. Whether he's just been groomed or not, he always looks like an over loved stuffed toy. Showers, baths, brushes... none of these things make him look anything other than unkempt. I'd have him no other way.

His favourite band is Beartooth.

Meet Cas, The ChaosCat...

Cas, giving his best 'blue steel'.
Cas, giving his best 'blue steel'.

Cas is my favourite three-legged gremlin. When he was a kitten, he received a spiral fracture in his femur from playing rough with his brother, and, unfortunately, amputation was the best option for his quality of life. Not that he's allowed being down a leg slow him down in the slightest. I often call him a cannonball, because he shoots out from nowhere and often causes damage to his surroundings. He truly is a trip hazard. A very lovable trip hazard.

Although his favourite thing to do is sing the song of his people (he's extremely vocal), he hates most other noises. Whether it's people outside or the doorbell, he will run and hide until the sound stops and he can go back to singing his arias. The only real exception to his noise aversion is the Netflix bong. He'll run to the TV and become entranced.

Fun fact: Cas has two extra toes on each of his paws. So despite having less feet than his brother, he has more toes!

Cas' true allegiances lie with whoever holds the sweeties. If you have a creamy cat treat, he will be your absolute best friend. That is until the treats are gone and it's time for him to terrorise his brother. Rupert, being the love bug he is, frequently tries to groom and cuddle his brother, only for it to end in a match worthy of Wrestlemania. The fur quite literally flies. All over the house.

His favourite band is Enter Shikari.

My heart.
My heart.

Although they wrestle, they do love each other and enjoy snuggles with or without me. Whilst they have such distinct personalities and look very different, they are littermates.

After losing our previous cat, I was supposed to only collect Cas. My husband didn't even bat an eye when I came home with double the amount of kittens that fateful day in 2023, he's just as crazy about cats as I am (thankfully). Our days are filled cuddling and playing, and although Rupert only has eyes for me, Cas is far more generous with his time and is way more of a daddy's boy.

Now that you've met Rupert and Cas, I hope that you enjoy hearing more about them and their escapades.

'You have learned enough to see that cats are much like you and me.' - T. S. Eliot
